Movie review: Babygirl (glass of milk anyone?)

Time for a movie about a BDSM relationship featuring super movie star Nicole Kidman

Babygirl, the movie

Nicole Kidman in Babygirl gave me serious Eyes Wide Shut vibes. And not just because of the simmering erotic tension, but for the mood, the secrets, and those stunning, super wide-angle shots that feel like a fantasy you can’t quite shake.

The film has this raw, hungry honesty when it comes to portraying desire. It’s refreshing! Sometimes crude, sometimes awkward, but always real. And I liked that.

What I really enjoyed (even though I’m more into role reversal) was the dynamic shift: Kidman plays an older female submissive opposite a younger male dominant. Finally, a variation on the typical D/s structure we’re used to seeing on screen — and it worked. Even better, it dared to centre an older woman’s sexuality without shame. Hollywood still seems terrified to do that. Kidman was sexy as hell, full stop. (Will she ever not be? Doubt it.) The fact that this story let her be that, and crave that, sent a powerful message.

That said… consent came very late into the story, and I definitely felt the delay. It wasn’t until the second half that we got anything close to clear negotiation or agreement, which felt out of step for a film that otherwise seemed so self-aware. A real missed opportunity.

Still, the whole office-sex-fantasy vibe gives it just enough taboo to make it deliciously gossipy. This story is about control — or better, about giving up control. A good watch overall.
