The Sex Museum in Amsterdam

Cause you gotta check out the Sex Museum while you're in Amsterdam

I promise this is the last one I write about Amsterdam 🙂 I just had such a good time, I had to make the most! (and share it with you of course)

The Sex Museum opened in Amsterdam in 1985, and it might be one first Sex Museum in Western Europe. It had 675,000 visitors in 2015, making it one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands. I had to pay a visit 🙂

Let's take a tour of the museum

What should I expect?

The museum is located near Central Station, and it’s in a typical Dutch house, with large windows and lots of natural light. It might not look like much from the outside, but it’s a labyrinth-like place which spreads across many floors.

The place was not very busy and seeing it had so many rooms and exhibits, it was easy to just wander about for a while.

The cost of the ticket is very affordable, set at €10.00 (£8.62), and it’s cheaper than most tourist attractions in Amsterdam. However the ticket cost doesn’t include anything else, just access to the museum.

What's the museum like?

Because of the many floors and staircases and exhibits, the museums might feel a little chaotic.

There is such an extensive collection of pictures, recordings, photos, paintings and artifacts from all ages and places. The artifacts take you through a journey in history across space and time. Think something like the Romans, Japanese tentacle porn, the Middle Ages, and a lot of Marilyn Monroe paraphernalia. Oh, and also a LOT of pornographic pictures from the 1900s.

Tentacle porn (Japan)

I would never lose my keys with that in my flat.

I just liked the style of this back and white drawing.

Facts about sex and other things are scattered around the place.

The size of that thing! Could work as a coat stand.

This one gets point for creativity and humour, don’t you think?

From afar they looked like white capped mushrooms 🙂

What do I think?

It took me over an hour to visit the walk around all the floors in the museum, but I didn’t stop to read all the exhibits, as I had dinner plans that day. If I had time, I could have probably spend a few hours browsing everything, and reading all the little note for each picture, recording, photo, painting or artifact.

There are also toilets, which came in handy 🙂

Should you have a few spare hours and are into pornographic material, this is absolutely the place for you!

These might keep you from quit smoking…
