Party review: Alice in DoxaLand by Doxa

Curioser and Curioser

By Doxa

Hello hello! Time for another party review!!

Last month, I went to Doxa for the first time. They are a London-based collective dedicated to creating welcoming, inclusive spaces for kink-curious and kink-experienced people alike. They host kink-adjacent socials, community gatherings, clothing swaps, pub quizzes, full play parties, and everything in between!

Their September party invited us to follow the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland. The party theme was Alice in DoxaLand, and the event was billed as Doxa’s biggest play party yet. So I kinda really wanted to be there hehe.

The promise was a night of DJs, immersive entertainment, oversized props, performers, a fully equipped playroom and, of course, plenty of opportunities to get a little bit naughty.

DOXA, your place to be

Shall we take a closer look?

THEME: This edition was all about Alice in Wonderland. And I can honestly say I have never seen so many bunny ears and Alices in one place! Things I very much enjoyed, particularly as I do love a man in bunny ears. However, worry not. Wonderland-inspired outfits, fantasy looks, glamour, latex, sequins, kink wear and theatrical costumes were all still very much available.

TIMING: The official pre-drinks started at 7.30pm in a pub nearby, with the main event opening its doors at 9pm. The first hour was deliberately more relaxed, with brighter lighting, lower music and games and activities designed to give people a chance to settle in and meet each other before the party properly transformed into Wonderland. The party and dancing really started around 11pm, and it went on until sunrise.

VENUE: The event took place at Egg London in King’s Cross. If you’ve been to Egg before, you’ll know it’s a rather large venue, with multiple spaces to explore rather than everything happening in one giant room. In fact, the venue is so big that there were two parties happening at the same time: Doxa and a vanilla one (what is vanilla?).

SPACES & ROOMS: The spaces were split into a dance floor and bar on the ground floor, with the cloakroom and gender-neutral toilets. There was also a chillout outdoor area with activities and a small bar on the first floor. I also spotted a small hot food corner for those of you who love some wings and chips. On the top floor you had the play space, which was medium-sized, with a few large beds, a sex swing and a few spanking benches around the place. There was also the usual basket full of condoms, cleaning supplies and lube.

DUNGEON MONITORS & KINKY SPACE: The organisers had DBS-checked, qualified and fully trained welfare monitors around the venue throughout the night, so there was always someone available if guests needed help or support. The dungeon monitors were genuinely lovely and BONUS one of them was also a DM at Pinky Promise, and she was as lovely as ever. Very warm, approachable and clearly experienced, they delivered check-ins at the playroom entrance, and the rules were clearly explained to each party.

As it got a bit busy, there was also a buzzer system for availability, so you didn’t have to wait in the queue. “Your spanking bench is ready!” instead of “your dinner table is ready!” has a whole new ring to it.

Organisers sent a little guide ahead of the event, isn’t that nice?

MUSIC: There was one main dance floor, and the music varied across the evening with various DJs. On the first floor there was no music, so it was perfect for chatting and catching up, while in the dungeon there was more mellow and sexy music playing throughout the evening.

Dress code

If you are unsure about your outfit or what to wear, please take a look at these posts I wrote on the topic:

ACTIVITIES: There were a few corners here and there for small activities. On the middle floor, there was a table with paint and mugs for you to decorate your own mug, with a little bag for anyone who wanted to take theirs home. Nearby, there was a popcorn machine with a large chocolate cake, candies and sweets for everyone!

A lady was also distributing personalised tags to add to your outfit with little messages. Mine obviously said “Call me Kinky Tiger.”

GUESTS: The crowd was super queer-friendly and very, very sex-positive. The makeup was a mix of Millennials and Gen Z, with a few Gen X attendees and older guests. Overall, it was a very friendly and chilled mix. Everyone put so much effort into their outfit, and it truly didn’t go unnoticed!

DRESS CODE: There wasn’t a strict dress code, but Doxa did ask guests to contribute to the atmosphere and avoid everyday streetwear such as jeans, plain T-shirts and gym wear. Which is what most kinky event organisers ask of their attendees.

As always, though, don’t panic if you’re new to this sort of event. You don’t need to arrive looking like you’ve just walked off a fetish fashion runway. Wear something that makes you feel good and fits the spirit of the night. (And if you are a man, tigers love bunny ears… just saying.)

VIBES: The atmosphere strongly reminded me of Pinky Promise (see Party review: Carnival of Creatures by Pinky Promise), but on a smaller scale which made it a lot easier to talk to new people. Very queer and very sex-positive, with more of a social/sex-positive vibe than a heavily fetish or kinky vibe, so I would say it’s an ideal event for newbies.

Etiquette

Before heading to a party, make sure you know what you want, your boundaries, and why you are there. Here is something to reflect on: Getting ready to go to a party.

“You’re warmly invited to step in, connect, and belong.”

OTHER RULES: As expected, photography by guests was not allowed, and we were all given stickers to add to our camera lenses at the entrance. Official photographers were present throughout the evening and were happy to take pictures if asked. And if you didn’t want to be in any pictures, you were also offered a red bracelet for the photographer’s visibility. Further details about Doxa can be found on here.

TICKETS: Events tickets are fairly priced and also they do have low income tickets and free carers tickets. Just drop them a line at doxproductions1@gmail.com and someone will get back to you!
