Book review: 101 Kinky Things by Kate Sloan

What a fun book!

A must-read if you are looking for inspiration or quick tips on kinky things to do

I came across this book while browsing on a friend’s wishlist and I had to get it! I thought it was good, and very nicely packaged. But let me tell you about the author first.

Kate Sloan is a writer from Toronto who specializes in sex, kink, and relationships. Her first was was published in 2021: 101 Kinky Things Even You Can Do, and her second book launched in 2022: 200 Words to Help you Talk about Sexuality & Gender.

She regularly writes for Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, GQ, Glamour, Playboy, Insider, Self, MEL, Daily Xtra, and the Establishment to name a few. She runs an award-winning sex blog, called girlyjuice.net and is also on Twitter.

She is a podcaster on @TheDildorks as part of Podcast Jukebox: a DIY Podcast Network, and co-presenter of @QuestionBoxShow. Basically she keeps herself veeeery busy.

Starting with I thought this book was very cute. It’s small, with a black textured cover and gold embossing. It has a nice weight to it, without being imposing. And it fits in your bag.

I opened the book and I was greeted with a lovely intro about kink, and some very welcome terminology’s explanations (similar to what I have on THE ABC OF BDSM).

Without going very far, on page three of the book, Kate covers consent, risks, and negotiation. She also (and *I LOVE HER FOR THIS*) dedicates a chapter at the very beginning to aftercare. Yes, because aftercare is super-important, and often considered an after-thought. Adding this to the very beginning of the book, was a lovely touch, as well as being SO essential in any type of play you do with your partner(s).

I thought the introduction was carefully written, by someone who really wanted you to succeed in whatever kinky endeavours you feel like starting. Because if you never tried anything kinky and don’t understand the risks, should it not go as planned… that could put you off trying anything else ever again.

An accessible and fun guide to kinky practices for everyone

Let’s move onto the 101 kinky things to do. I thought the order was absolutely random and had no specific order, yet I thoroughly enjoyed it. You pretty much can read any of the kinky things in any order you like, thou I thought of reading it in the order intended by the author.

Some chapters were so very informative about all sort of kinks. Format was always the same: short intro, followed by three handy tips for each one of the chapters. Some chapter might needed more context, but if she did that, it would end up messing up the flow of the book itself. So I would say it’s perfect as it is!

I read this book in a couple of sittings, as it was very enjoyable, I didn’t want to put it down. Absolutely recommend it to anyone who fancies exploring something new, or just learn more about kink in general 🙂 – Enjoy the reading!
