Countdown to Halloween with Christine

UNTIL HALLOWEEN

We are still on lockdown here in the UK, and I know chances are slim, but I am really hoping for normality in time for Halloween… Until then, I thought of getting some inspirations for things to do at home (or at least fantasize about it); so I re-watched the whole TV series ‘The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell‘ – available on Netflix, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show is a blend between GBBO (Great British Bake Off) and Beetlejuice; with an Hocus Pocus vibe (yes, the 1993 Disney movie, available on Disney+ by the way).

Christine McConnell, portrayed by herself, is a baker and artist who feeds and cares for the creatures that live with her. These creatures include Rose, a reanimated raccoon who was crushed to death by a garbage truck;  Rankle, the living (and bit**ing) mummy of an ancient Egyptian cat; Vivienne (portrayed by Dita Von Teese), the ghost of a woman who lives in the mirror, and gives Christine advice on fashion; and many more.

But who is Christine McConnell?

Full series of six episodes available on Netflix.

Christine McConnell is a American baker, model, designer, and actress, who was noticed by Netflix when she turned her parents house into a Monster House. Yes, that’s right. Christine decorated her parents’ Los Angeles-area home for Halloween by adding massive, spooky eyes and fangs to its exterior.

The holiday makeover vent viral and Christine got approached with a number of potential deals. “I think 300 production companies or something had reached out,” McConnell says, “and they all wanted to do a reality-based show. And I don’t really watch that stuff mostly — I mean I have a few guilty pleasures — but I’m much more into scripted TV and storylines, and things like that.”

Did you know?

Dita Von Teese & Christine McConnell are good friends!

Last month I wrote about Burlesque, starting with its origins all the way to modern days. I mentioned a couple of leading production houses, and some key figures in the Burlesque community.

One of them was Dita Von Teese, born Heather Renée Sweet, she’s an American vedette, burlesque dancer, model, businesswoman, fashion designer, singer, and actress – yes, all of it – and she’s credited with re-popularizing burlesque performance, earning the moniker “Queen of Burlesque”.

Dita was the first woman to show Christine that you can live in whatever era you find most beautiful, she helped become who she is, and are now good friends.

Christine McConnell website here, she also has several other YouTube videos if you run out of episodes too quickly and need a fix, and on Patreon if you would like to access to exclusive content.
