Something cool (and graphic) to watch on the weekend...
I am a sucker for Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, and such. But recently, I have discovered another couple of comic book publishers: Wildstorm and Dynamite Entertainment.
And you know what these two had in common? They both published The Boys.
What is The Boys? The Boys is a comic book series set in the mid ’00, in a world where superheroes exist, and a big corporation called Vaught International monetise their services and “protection”.
Sounds familiar? *cough* mafia *cough*. But that’s not all, most of the superheros are corrupted by money and fame, are reckless, put the public at risk, and give zero fucks about casualties. So here come the good guys, a small (like really small) group of ‘resistance’, who is just not having it. They plan to take down Vaught, and the super-abled assholes with it. They are “The Boys”.
An guess what…. The Boys is not just a comic book. It’s now also a TV show.
And it’s on Prime.
And it’s FUCKING AMAZING.
Season 1 landed in 2019, and I literally had to binge it. Like the addict that I am. Then Season 2 landed in late 2020, and I obviously was ready to binge that too, although episodes were released week by week, so it was a slow binge.
I fucking loved The Boys. It’s graphic, crude, blunt, and it shows you both the best and the worst of people.
The Boys shows you what the monetisation of superheros could look like and how dark it could get. It touches topics such as sexual assault in the workplace, the risk common people encounter when dating and/or having sex with a superhero (there is a support group for those who… ‘paid a high price’), what a super-abled sex club could look like, some kinks, and more. If you haven’t already watched it, I SUPER recommend it!
